House B2 – Jury Report
House B2 reveals the power of architectural empathy. The architects who undertook the project on a site occupied by an ordinary house dating from 1927, together with the clients, decided not to demolish it, but instead to develop its hidden potential. With great care, they opened it towards the rear, creating a hypnotic enfilade from the street, through the house, and out again into the garden.
The discreet merging of old and new creates a beauty that a new-build could not have achieved. It is a contemporary beauty that serves as a reminder that we should treat our world more gently and understand that the answer to our desires may be hidden in something we already have.
