Exhibition ARTEFAKTI: Plečnik Awards 2026
The Artefakti exhibition, which accompanies the presentation of the Plečnik Awards, this year extends beyond the interior exhibition space of the Plečnik House for the first time and spreads into the garden, thereby itself becoming an expression of the central idea of the award-winning works, defined as a ‘shift’.
We understand a ‘turn’ as a change of direction, a shift in the understanding and functioning of architecture. Such a shift does not happen of its own accord, but requires a conscious gesture – an action, a reaction, an intervention – a response to space, time and context. It may be intuitive or carefully planned; in a saturated world of excess, it manifests as a radical turn towards the essential: the primordial, the tactile, the meaningful. Using just the right means and approach to the existing, it builds an identity of layering, interweaving and symbiosis – in time, space and relationships.
The exhibition therefore departs from the standard format of architectural presentations of plans and images. Rather than an objective presentation of the (absent) architectural object, it conveys it through its physical and metaphysical traces. The artefacts on display are not necessarily physical fragments of the award-winning works, but rather carriers of messages, emotions and spatial sensations; creators of atmosphere and interpreters of the original architectural ideas. They engage the visitor not only intellectually, but also sensorially and experientially.
However, the exhibition can also be experienced in a completely unburdened way, as a collection of autonomous artistic gestures that enter into a temporary dialogue with the artefacts and environments of Plečnik’s home.
